FOOTBALL.

THE WEDNESDAY GAME. THE COMPETITIONS CONTINUED. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, May 5. Good football was out of the question to-day, when the Wednesday competitions were continued, the matches for the most part being played in heavy rain and on greasy fields. During the greater part of the afternoon heavy winds were blowing. CITY II v. OHANGAI S The City-Ohangai match was not without interest, notwithstanding the slippery nature of the'ground. There'was little opportunity for back play, and the match resolved itself into a forward struggle. The early stages of the game witnessed good, forward work on the part of both teams, and play was restricted to midfield, neither side gaining any great advantage. Gradually City forced the play into Ohangai’s territory and Ohangai forced. Fast forward work resulted in City again gaining ground, and Ohangai again forced. City continued to press hard and from a scramble in front of Ohangai’s goal Gity dribbled the ball over and Hammond scored. In spite of a strong wind, Loder’s kick at goal was successful. A few' minutes later City took the ball upfield at their feet and Norris dribbled the ball over and scored. The try was unconverted. Half-time was called with the scores: City 8, Ohangai 0. The second spell opened with Ohangai forcing play towards their opponent’s line and the game was brightened by one or two fast forward rushes on the part of the home team. Excitement was tense when Ohangai attacked continuously, their forwards workitg well. Their attempts were at last successful when from a line-out close to the corner Hogan scored. Lees' kick failed. Up and downfield play continued for some time, until City forced their way downfield and from a line-out a forward rush took the ball over Ohangai’s line and Norris touched down. The kick at goal was unsuccessful. From a line-out Ohangai secured the ball and placed a long kick in front of City’s goal and Walsh, outpacing several City players, again scored. Hunt kicked a splendid goal. The game ended with the score: City 11. Ohangai 8. Mr. K. McNae, refereed.

TOKAORA 9 v. WHAREROA 3. Tokaora put isp a good performance against Whareroa at Whareroa, and in spite of heavy rain at intervals, a good game resulted, Tokaora winning by good forward play. There were several fast forward rushes, and although Whareroa played courageously, they were hardly up to the form of their opponents. At half-time Tokaora was leading by six to nil. During the second spell the contest was more even, and there was good forward work on the part of both teams. The best perforriiance of the game was a splendid run by Mundy, who evaded several Whareroa players and s<®red. For Tokaora, Wells, Griffin and Mundy, and for Whareroa Tomlinson scored, tries. Wills and Hughes played well for Whareroa, and for Tokaora Woods and Griffin were outstanding. Mr. L. A. Clapham refereed. FRASER ROAD 16 v. NORMAN BY 3. At Fraser JloacL Normanby met and were defeated by Fraser Road after a hard forward game. Conditions were not favourable, and the game resolved itself into a forward scramble. The score was opened by Fraser Road, with a penalty goal, and tries were scored by Johnson, Notman and Hepburn, while Pohi and Taniwha converted tries. For Normality Duggan scored. For the most part the game was played in heavy jain. Fraser Road’s superiority was due to the fast following up of the forwards, who appeared in better form and were rather heavier than their opponents. Mr. J. Kiley refereed.
