WESTOWN SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The ordinary meeting of the Westown School Committee was held last night, when there were present Messrs. Jas. Garcia (chairman), L. T. Haylock, W. G. Anstis, C. C. Gilbert, E. J. Uhlander, J. Casey and J. W. Darby (hon. secretary). An apology was received from Mr. L. S. O’Donnell. The headmaster (Mr. H. F. McClune) reported that the average roll for the month of April was 246.6, the average attendance for the same period being 230.18. This was slightly lower than usual, owing to the prevalence of colds and other minor ailments. Miss M. Kirton had resumed duty on May 3. Mrs. J. M. McDiarmid, who had been relieving, completed her term on April 60- _ The headmaster expressed appreciation of the cheerful and enthusiastic way she carried out her duties while teaching in the school. The boys had cleared round the trees in the playground, and Mr. Green had made a good clearing in the plantation. They were indebted to Mr. Southam for shrubs and cuttings. If some of the black soil which was being removed from the basket ball area were dumped in the front of the building it would help considerably in the formation of the gardens. and flower beds. The caretaker required mats for the entrance, etc. It was hoped that something would be dene in regard to the shelter before the cold weather set in. If it rained at all during intervals the children had to be kept in their classrooms. As one. class had to be taught in the shelter, too, until the new room was added, it could be readily understood how "-much a warm, dry shelter would be appreciated. A class of twenty-five children was at present being taught in the teachers’ room. The football competitions had commenced, and the basket ball matches would begin after the vacation, which would commence on Friday, the school re-opening on Tuesday, May 28. It was resolved to draw the attention of the Board of Education to the urgent need of some steps being taken in regard to the provision of adequate shelter during the winter. Votes of thanks were accorded Mr. Southam for his donation of shrubs, etc., and to Mr. Green for his offer of assistance in connection with working bees. Mr. W. G. Anstis was appointed grounds supervisor and Messrs. C. 0. Gilbert and L. P. Haylock a visiting committee for the ensuing month.
