ON THE GREENS

NEW YEAR BOWLING TOURNAMENT. TARANAKI CENTRE’S ANNUAL FIXTURE DETAILS OF YESTERDAY’S PLAY.

The Taranaki Bowling Centre’s New Year tournament was commenced at New Plymouth yesterday. The weather conditions were the reverse of ideal for bowling. Up to the previous day better •weather could not have been asked for. On New Year’s Eve, however, torrential rain fell, making the greens heavy, ■while throughout yesterday strong gusty wind and intermittent showers were the rule. A further discomforting feature of the weather was the change in temperature. During the day there was a period of extreme mugginess which gave way as the last heads were being played to a cold snap. Under the circumstances, it is not to be wondered at that many of the bowlers did not strike true form. Forty-six rinks, a record, are competing in the tournament. They have been divided into five sections of eight rinks and one of six. Play yesterday was on the Fitaroy, West End and Vogeltown greens. Three games of 21 heads were played and tlirS morning the fourth and ififth rounds will be played, leaving the semi-finals and final to be played this afternoon. The Vogeltown green will be the scene of the closing games. As the result of yesterday's games the rinks of J. D. Sole, Chapman. Bary and Nosworthy enter the fourth round with three wins to their credit.
