MARTON RACES.

SUMMER MEETING OPENS. GOOD DAY FOR THE PUBLIC. SEVERAL FAVOURITES SCORE, CUP WON BY GRAND KNIGHT. (By Wire —From “Moturoa.”) Feilding, Last Night. The Marton summer meeting openexl at Feilding to-day in showery weather, but the conditions improved during the afternoon. The track was in fair order. Scratchings were very heavy, small fields being the order of the day and winners were easy to pick. Grand Knight, iSleet and Many Colours continued in winning vein and the public had a really good innings' Scratchings reduced the field in the Trial Plate from nineteen to eleven run ners. Royal Land was made a good favourite and Banjuke, Royal Elm and Rising Star were «tlso wqII supported. Mr. Alf. Vincent sent them off in line, Equalise showing out from Wembley, Royal Land, Carmalt, Rising Star and Banjuke. Wembley and Equalise were still in front with half the distance gone and Royal Land was right up next, followed by Carmalt and Banjuke together. Royal Land led into the straight from Banjuke, Wembley and Rising Star, and the first-named pair had a good tusstle all the way to the judge’s box. Banjuke wearing his opponent down over the final stages to win a good race by a long neck. Capitulation finished on best o f the others to gain •third place two lengths away, just in front of Wembley and Carmalt. Banjuke won on his merits. Royal Land is not as good as his party think. Capitulation finished well but had nothing behind him. Wembley went well for a while and may do better under lighter weights. FAVOURITE WINS EASILY. Only half-a-dozen went to the post for the Hack Hurdles. Many Colours, despite his big weight, was the public’s elect aud Slump also carried big money. Slump took up the running from a good start, with Captain Wai, Many Colours and Peter Rosa next. Koauau ran to the front entering the straight and had a big break on the field passing the stands. Many Colours was at the head of the next lot, with Peter Rosa, and Captain Wai next. Koauau was still going strongly six furlongs from home and Many Colours, Peter Rosa, Slump, Captain Wai and Matu followed in that order. Koauau began to tire at the four

furlongs, where Ylany Colours closed up fas-t and Peter Rosa, Captain Wai and Matu also improved their positions. Many Colours had shaken off Koauau before turning for home and ran in a very easy winner by a length and a half from Matu, which finished fast. Koauau was a fair third and Peter Rosa, Captain Wai and Slump were next. Many Colours was much too superior, but Matu would have been much closer if he had not been interfered with twice, .particularly when making his run entering rhe straight the last time. Koauau ran well as long as his ■ condition lasted. Slumji fenced poorly. HOT FANCY FAILS. Bank Note and Hodren were withdrawn from the Juvenile Hack, leaving six to go into the starters hands. Note, which won so easily at Awapuni, was voted the best of good things and was entrusted with almos-t twice the amount invested on Gleninncs, while Limerick and Henna also had fair backing. Volplane was actually first away from an even break, but -Gleninnes quickly took up the running from Note. Volplane and Henna. Gleninnes maintained a two lengths advantage to the straight, where Note challenged but could make no impression on -the leader, which won nicely by a length and a half. Volplane was a fair third, and then came Henna, Waramau and Limerick. Glenni-nnes easily showed his superiority to Note, though the latter ran gamely. Limerick is not ready yet. The others are not brilliant. RACE FOR THE CUP. Wholesale withdrawals saw the eighteen carded for the Marton Crip reduced •to six. Ngata finished up a strong favourite, with big money also for Clarinda and Grand Knight. The favourite did not hit out too well in his preliminary and Clarinda was decidedly sore. Grand Knight went best and no fault, could be found with Kilceit, Imperial Spark and Martulla. A perfect start saw the field run in line for a short distance, when Imperial Spark and Ngata, both nearest the rails, drew out and led pa<ssiyg the stands from Grand Knight. Kilceit, Clarinda and Martulla. Ngata and Imperial Spark were a couple of lengths clear of Grand Knight, passing the six furlongs, Kilceit being two lengths further back and Clarinda ami Martulla in -the rear. Racing along the hack Ngata and Imperial Spark wer«* still cutting each other's throats, while Grand Knight was kept within striking distance and Kilceit improved her l>osition. Ngata appeared to have Imperial Spark’s measure before mrning for home and was first to straighten up, but Grand Knight challenged at the distance and Kilceit could be seen coming fast on the outside. Ngata here met with interference, a hump knocking him out of his stride. Grand Knight then looked like winning easily, but he tired over the final stages and just lasted long enoiigh to win by a head from Kilceit Ngata was two lengths away third, just in front of Martulla, Clarinda and Imperial Spark bringing up the rear. Considering the state of the track it wAs a good gallop and the best horse won. Ngata’s only chance of beating a good sprinter like Grand Knight was to set a hot pace all the way. was suited by the going ami may 8o better next start. Martulla ran her usual fair race. Clarinda lias clearly had enough racing, and Imperial Spark failed to see the journey out.

A GREAT FINISH. Just over half the field carded for the Dash Hack Handicap saw the nine starting. Lady Glissas, with Bert Morris on top, was better backed than Sleet and Duet'to. The ifield gave no trouble at the barrier and left in close order. Gangolin and Duetto were the quickest on their feet and were to ■ gethcr running along the back, Constellation, Girribillie and Carrigallen being at the head of the next bunch. Girribillie ran up to the leading pair crossing the top of the course and there was little between the trio below the distance. Duetto and Girribillie were having a great set 'to when Sleet crept through on the rails and joined in fifty yards from the post. Duetto and Sleet contested every inch of the remaining distance, Sleet just getting home by » head. Girribillie was a close third, followed by Lady Glissas, Constellation and Lin Arlington all bunched. The winner, Sleet, was lucky to get through. Duetto ran a great race and is improving with every gallop and her turn cannot be far off. Lady Glissas did not. seem to go well in the early stages, but she was finishing on well. WON ALL THE WAY. Only six paraded for the Railway Handicap. Orchid being backed as if the race was all over. Economist ami King Pot were the best -backed of the others. Orchid was quickly in front, followed by Ruby Ring, Birkie and King i’ot. Ruby Ring retired three furlongs front the finish and King Pot ran up to Or chid’s quarter as they came into tht straight. Orchid drew away in the run home, winning very easily from King Pot. Aliss Hu.pana, Birkie and Economist were together next. Orchid justified public confidence, reducing the race to a procession. King Pot ran about a lot in the straight but had no chance of defeating the winner. Economist was poorly handled and a change uf horseman might improve his chances next time. WELL HANDLED TO VICTORY. There were ten runners in the New Y'car Hack Handicap. Bon March ami Kilburn monopolised the betting and once again the public picked them correctly. A splendid start was effected, Bon March leading Tawehi, Asleep and Son o’ Mine past the stand. Turnin* out of the straight Son o’ Mine almost came down. Asleep was in front ?passing the six furlonge, followed by Bon March, Son o’ Mine, Strongbolt and

Kilburn. The latter rushed to the front four furlongs from home, with Asleep, Bon March and Son o' Mine next. Kilburn led into the straight, but Bon March had his measure at 'the distance and came on to score easily by a length and a half from Kilburn, who was a bare length in front of Son o’ Mine. Then came Asleep and Rawheru. Bon March won because she was best handled. Kilburn has had too much racing. Son o’ Mine struck trouble twice, otherwise he might have won. It was an unsatisfactory race, or rather a bumping match between indifferent horsemen. PUBLIC SCORE AGAIN. The Stewards’ Welter only attracted five starters out of thirteen acceptors. Zaragoza was heavily backed, carrying nearly twice as much as Alabama, Piquant and Ring Potoa, which were evenly supported. Piquant was in front when the field settled down, with Zaragoza and Alabamti next and King Potoa last. Zar.igoza was alongside Piquant three furlongs from home and the pair entered the straight together. Zar igoza finished best and won easily from Alabama, which came fast. Ring Potoa was a fair third and Piquant fourth. THE RACING. RESULTS IN DETAIL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Feilding, Last Night.
