TOURIST LEAGUE’S WORK. ADVERTISING NEW PLYMOUTH. ROAD TO MARYLAND HILL. The renewed interest that is being taken in the work of the New Plymouth Tourist and Expansion League was made evident last night by the largo attendance of members to discuss ways and meaps of further advertising the town and district. Mr. G. M. Spenca presided, and others present were Messrs. C. B. Webster, F. H. Moore, R. Lane, G. E. Jago, W. Graham, P. Mascall, Frank Amoore, A. Thorne, W. Hookham, G. Gibson, Eric Shaw, T. G. Hirst, W. N. Stephenson, F. S. Hodson, R. Day, H. W. Whitcomibe and J. L. Scoullar. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. A. S. Allan, H. S. Brookman, Duckworth and Stuart, The provision of a road giving access to Marsland Hill was the subject, of some discussion, the opinion Being expressed that the borough council had not fully appreciated the views of the league on the subject. The league did not want a -costly road; merely a road that would allow elderly people and visitors to visit the hill in comfort. A suggestion was made that a clay road might fill the bill for the present, but it’ was pointed out that such a road would not be of great use after wet weather. The matter was left in thi* hands of the roads committee to go into I further. Dealing with the publicity work of the league, the chairman of the committee (Mr. J. L. Scoullar) reported that the committee had been subdivided into sub committees to deal with photographs, general publicity and the league’s advertising folder. The appeal for photographs of the scenic att;actions, etc., of the town and district was being responded to. Miss Wyonne Haybittie had kindly consented to poae for tha picture of a bathing girl on the sands which is to be the central figure of the cover design of the folder. Mr. Hodson had agreed to take the photographs and also to reproduce any photos sent in and to take others. Regarding finance, Mr. C. B. Webster (chairman of the finance commi'-ee) reported that the committee had gone into ways and means of collecting funds. It thought the business community and others should be circularised and a detailed canvass of the town made. An __ idea was that every subscriber should become a member of the league, and that payment of the subscription should be split over a period. When the canvase was to be made the whole of the town would be divided in blocks and canvassers appointed to each. It was left to the committee to draw up a programme in detail and report with a suggested date for the canvass to a meeting to be called by the president. Mr. Hirst reported that the wordbuilding competition committee had found that it was not advisable to hold such a competition at the present time, but ft was now investigating the possibilities of a crossword puzzle competition and would report in detail at the next meeting. A circular from the New Zealand Tourist League regarding a world-wide selling campaign of tourist trips to New Zealand was referred to the publicity committee for a report. The president reported that Messrs. May and Arrowsmith had very kir. lly placed their rooms at the disposal of the league for meetings on any Tuesday night they were not otherwise engaged. A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs, May a»d Arrowsmith, while a similar vote was also accorded the New Plymouth newspapers for the publicity they had afforded the league’s appeal for photos.
