STRATFORD NEWS.

VETERINARY CLUB VALUE TO FARMERS. PROGRESS OF THE SCHEME. (From Our Own Reporter.) Stratford, July 21. The committee of the Stratford 4. and P. Association and representatives of dairy factories near the town, who are organising a veterinary club for the Stratford district, have been making inquiries both inside and outside New Zealand in order to secure a suitable veterinary surgeon to act for tho club. A man who is believed to be eminently suitable is in touch with tho committee, and while no definite oiler has a, yet been made, it is understood that if the club is successfully launched he will be prepared to accept the position. The preliminary arrangements in connection with the formation of the club are now practically complete, and the committee is taking steps to procure members. Qualification for membership consists of the holding of shares in tho Stratford, Midhirst, Cardiff and Ngaere dairy companies, or residence within a radius of- six miles of the Stratford post office. The subscription will take the form of a guarantee, under which members will be required to guarantee 2s per head for pedigree cattle and Is per head for grades, the minimum guarantee per herd being 20j. In consideration of their becoming members of the club, the services ol a veterinary surgeon, in whom the utmost reliance may be placed, will be at. the disposal of farmers at a much reduced rate per visit. This rate will he determined by an executive composed of a member from each of the four factories and one from the A. and P. Association. Rules and regulations have been drawn -up for the guidance of members, and these will be submitted to the new executive.

The promoters of the schema feel that a resident veterinary surgeon ot the highest qualifications is essential in a dairying district such as Stratford, and the club has been formed in order that his services may be made availaote at the lowest possible cost. In view of the smallness of the guarantee compared with the benefits which membership will confer upon dairyfarmers, there should be no hesitation in linking up with the club. Similar clubs are working successfully in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty districts, and farmers there are well satisfied with the results.

GENERAL ITEMS,

Business was brisk at the Stratford Town Hall to-day, when the bazaar in aid of funds for the Catholic school was opened to the public by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan). Instead of the usual arrangement of individual stalls, the committee had arranged the goods In the form of a gaily decorated square, each side of which contained different articles for sale and was attended by different helpers. The stallholders were: Fancy counter, Miss A. Kirkwood and Miss M. J. Morrissey; produce counter, Mesdames D. J. Malone and F. Uniacke; sweets, Miss M. Hughes and Miss M. Massey; supper-room, Mrs. I’. McGrath and helpers; bran tub and fish pond, Miss L. Malone. In the evening children from the school contributed various items, which proved very enjoyable. Dr. Augusta Manoy writes to her Stratford friends from Vienna, where she 'is taking a post-graduate course in that branch of medical science in which she is specialising. She speaks of- Vienna as beautiful, and says that all traces of the war arc gone from th<u city. The doctor is a good linguist, and hopes to visit the universities at Paris and Berlin, and then finish up her studies in London. She was one of the moat brilliant of tho old District High School pupils, and sends greetings to her old schoolmates.

About 9.30 p.m. last night a motorear owned by Mr. Major, of Tarata, was proceeding towards Stratford, and at Monmouth Road the driver mistook the turning and in endeavouring to rectify the mistake caused the car to turn over, and be considerably damaged. There were two men and two ladies in the car at the time, and they all received a severe shaking, in addition to which one of the men received several cuts about the face, which necessitated medical attention. Attention is drawn to the annual meeting of the Stratford Jersey Cattle Club, which takes place i;i the A. and , P. office, Stratford, to-morrow (Wednesday) at 1.30 p.m. In the evening the club will hold its annual smoke concert, at which Mr. E.
