BOWLING.

LOCAL TOURNAMENT QUESTION. PARK CLUB'S VIEWS. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, June 18. The suggestion of the Manawatu Bowling Centre for the consideration of the various West Coast Centres, that the many small local tournaments should be abandoned in favour of ’big West Coast tournaments held alternately at Palmerston North, Wanganui and New Plymouth, met with a very cold reception at the annual meeting of the Park (Hawera) Bowling Club last night. The retiring president, Mr. C. R. Stannard, said the local tournaments were going along very well, and he did not think it would be wise to do away with them. The other scheme was all very well for the big towns. The abandonment of the local tournaments would pievent the small men without riches from enjoying tournament play. Mr. Thurston said they should send a map of Taranaki to the Manawatu Centre, pointing out that there was such a place as Hawera. Mr. Stannard said he did not think the suggestion would be received with any favour by the Taranaki Centre. Mr. F. Quin moved that the delegates to the centre ’be instructed to oppose the Manawatu suggestion, and the motion wrs carried unanimously.

WINTER BOWLS. FITZROY v. TOWN. Under very favourable weather conditions yesterday afternoon an enjoyable match was played on the Fitzroy green, which was in excellent order, between four rinks of New Ply mouth players and a similar number of Fitzroy members. The visitors suffered defeat by 50 points, though they tried hard to score more freely, but their luck was out. At the afternoon tea adjournment the president of the local club gave a hearty welcome to the visitors, Mr. 1. C. Eookes replying on ibehalf of the town club and expressing the hope that further friendly games would be played during the winter. The match yesterday was the first of the season.

BRITISH BOWLING TEAM.

•COMING NEW ZEALAND TOUR. ENGLISH CHAMPION INCLUDED. A team of British bowlers who are to visit Australia and New Zealand next summer will leave England on September 27. The tour has been organised by Mr. Melbourne Orchard, a former New Zealander now resident in London. In a letter to a friend in Sydney he states that three days will be spent in Perth, five in Adelaide, ten days each in Melbourne and Sydney, and three days in Brisbane. They will then sail from Sydney to Auckland, and work through Now Zealand to the Dominion tournament in Dunedin, returning to Auckland after visiting other centres, and the Rotorua tournament. Allowing for all the time lost in travelling round Australia, it seems likely that they ought to arrive in Auckland a few days before Christinas. Mr.'Orchard is a champion bowler, having won the Lonsdale Trophy, which in London is esteemed as the principal laurel in the game. In his letter, Mr. Orchard says: “The dates arranged by me are going to be strictly adhered to. It was necessary to take up that attitude, otherwise the trip might have been impossible, as the time will be the essence of the contract. The team will comprise 32 players, and with the few ladies going will make a total number of 40. Jt will go out under the auspices of the International Bowling Board, which comprises England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The president of the English Bowling Association is going to be one of the party. I feel sure that this team will be a good one, from a playing standpoint, and great pains are being taken to send tip-top players. The champion of England is going.” The team is expected to reach Auckland in December.
