DISTRICT NEWS.
OPUNAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The old footballers are organising a smoke social for the 20th; all the “hasbeens” are taking up the celebration of old times. The Power Board electric scheme in a few years has developed from'a loan of £7OOO to £72,000. Originally it setout to take in an area of two miles. Now’ it radiates over an area of 20 miles. A building costing £2200 to construct and furnish has just been completed PUKENGAHIL (From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the newly formed Pukengahu Social Club was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening, May 4, Air. J. O’Neill presiding over an attendance of about 24 persons. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr. J. O’Neill; vice-president, Mr. \V. H. Harris; committee, Messrs. J. D. Rowe, D. AlcGuiness, H. Death, T. Walsh, J. Coffey, T. Old, J. C. Booker, A. Coleman, and V. Schwieters; treasurer, Mr. Harris; honorary auditor, Air. D. Blackstock; secretary, Air. E. Harper. The object of the hall is to eventually build a hall, which is very much needed in the district at present. The club has about £9O in hand, and expect the amount to be considerably augmented this winter with the fortnightly euchre parties at present held in the school. Special thanks are due to Aliss V. O’Neill, who gave a lot of time in going round the district for the purpose of getting sufficient signatures to establish the club. A football club has been formed in the district and has entered two teams in the competitions. Judging by the way the members turn up to practice, the success of the club is assured. The club appreciates the generosity of Air. Stevenson in granting its members the use of such a splendid playing area. The power board is making good headway with the erection of the poles through the district, and it looks as though the lighting will .be an accomplished fact before the winter is far advanced.
