CHAMBER GF COMMERCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, May 13. The bi-monthly meeting of the Waitara Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday night. There was a fair attendance of members. Prior to business being taken the chairman (Mr. C. R. Stead) referred to the loss the country had sustained by the death of Mr. Massey, and the following motion was passed: “That this chamber convey to Mrs. Massey and family its deepest sympathy in the loss they have sustained in the death of the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey and place on record its very high appreciation of his services to country and Empire as Premier, statesman and Imperialist.” The • motion was carried in silence. I The Minister for Railways advised 1 that better branch line services were under consideration. I In regard to advertising the town, ! the chairman reported that the Retailers' Association was interesting itself in that direction. It was intended to erect sign-posts at the intersection of the Inglewood and New Plymouth roads. The chairman stated that undoubtedly the chief attraction would be the seaside, and it was hoped to arrange -a conference shortly between the chamber, the seaside society and the Retailers’ Association to go into the whole question. Mr. T. C. List, of New Plymouth, who had kindly consented to address the chamber, was then introduced to the meeting. Mr. List gave impressions gained by him on his recent' trip to the Old Country, and his address was listened to with wrapt attention and much enjoyed. Mr. List was accorded g hearty vote of thanks. GENERAL ITEMS. The .Soldiers’ and Civilians’ Club held its fortnightly euchre party on Monday evening, when an enjoyable evening was spent. Thirteen and a-half tables were occupied at euchre, and the following were successful; —Ladies, Miss McPherson 1, Mrs. G. Goddard 2. Men, Mr. E. A. Dugdale 1, Mr. J. McFarlane 2. The Borough Council staff assembled in the council chambers on Saturday to say good-ibye to the late town clerk (Mr. C. H. Tate). Mr. Morgan (the Mayor) briefly referred to Mr. Tate’s many good qualities and the high esteem in which he was held. On behalf of the staff he presented a gold mounted fountain pen to Mr. Tate, who suitably replied. Widespread sympathy is felt for the husband, Mr. V. Tate, and the parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Gaustad, of Mrs. Mary Ann Tate, who died in the New Plymouth Hospital on Tuesday. Mrs. Tate was highly respected by a very large circle of friends. Deceased was only 33 years of age.
