SHOPPING HOURS.

THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS POINTS FOR HOUSE-WIVES. RETAILERS CLOSED FOUR DAYS. To-day and to-night (Christmas Eye) mark the climax of Christmas shopping activities, and with the exception of butchers and bakers, retailers will not reopen till Monday. The following points in connection with the holidays during the next two weeks will be of interest to New Plymouth housewives and visitors. For retailers Christmas Eve will be a late night, and all shops will be open until 10 p.m. They will not open again until December 29 and 30, when business can be done hours of 9 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. On December 31 another late night will be observed, shops being closed all day on January 1 and 2. The usual hours will be again observed on January 3. Butchers will observe the following hours: December 24, open till 8.30 p.m.; December 25 and 26, close all day; December 27, close at 10 a.m. sharp; January 1 and 2, close all day; January 3, close at noon.

The only day on which the tea-rooms and pastry cooks will close will be on Christmas Day. For bakers baking day will be on Wednesday, December 24, and no more bread will be available until Saturday, December 27. The same arrangement will hold good during New Year week, bread being available on Wednesday, December 31, and no more until Saturday, January 3. Fruit is always in demand at the festive season, and it will be possible to procure this on every day during the Christmas and New Year season except on Christmas Day. Drapers will adhere to the hours as decided on by the Retailers’ Association. The wants of the smokers have not been forgotten. Except for Christmas Day, tobacconists will be open on every day. On Boxing Day, however, they will be open only for about two and a half hours in the morning.
