DISTRICT NEWS.

PUKENGAHU. ('From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual breaking-up ceremony of the Pukengahu school took place on Thursday evening, and was attended by a large number of parents and friends. A splendid programme was given by the pupils of the school under the guidance of their teachers (Mrs. Green and Miss Were), who are to be congratulated for the manner in which the programme was presented. The following was the programme:—'National Anthem; •‘Welcome,” Patricia Walsh; violin solo,Doris O’Neill; “An Acrostic Christmas,” juniors and seniors; poem. “The Pepper Box,” Margaret Roberts'on; pianoforte solo, Vera Death; poem, “Red Riding Hood/’ Hector Wilson; swing song, juniors and seniors; “Moses and the Eggs,” Thomas Death and Doris O’Neill; pianoforte duet, Florence Harris and Ruby Old; recitation, “Holly and Mistletoe,” juniors and seniors; song, “The Burlesque Band,” juniors and seniors; song, “Good-night.” Mr. O’Neill (chairman) congratulated the staff on the excellent work of the school during the past year, and then distributed the following prizes: Jean Robertson, Doris O’Neill, Donald Robertson, proficiency prizes; Vera Death, reading; Florence Harris, writing; Beryl Wilson, general good work; 'Herbert! /Green, arithmetic; William Rowe, improvement; Margaret Walsh, I Composition; Alfred Harper, attendance; Thomas Death, reading; Maxwell Schvvie’ters, arithmetic; Vivian Ward, general information; Hazel Ward, industry and good work; Patricia Walsh, arithmetic; Nina Harris, composition; Dulcie Schwieters, general information; Justina Murphy, attendance; Harry Rowe, general improvement; Kelvin Coffey, arithmetic; John O’Connor, general improvement; Nina Murphy, arithmetic; Mary Walsh, reading and recitation. Each junior infant was given a book as a prize. Miss Were’s special prize for sewing was yon by Beryl Wilson. In a neat little speech Nina Harris made a presentation of a handsome •brush and comb to Miss Were as a slight token of esteem in which she is held by the children. Miss Were suitably replying. Supper was served and the floor cleared for dancing, which was carried on into the small hours of the morning, one and all voting it one of the best evenings spent in Pukengahu.
