HAWERA NEWS.

NEW HOSPTIAL BUILDING. CONTRACT PRICE £87,652. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, Dec. 23. A tender of, £87,652 10s was accepted to-day by the Hawera Hospital Board for the erection of the new public hospital. The successful tenderer was Mr. T. C. Young, of Feilding, who will commence work early in the New Year. Nine tenders were received, ranging from Mr. Young’s, which was the lowest, to £124,000. The Hospital Board is completely satisfied with the tender, and the associated architects, Messrs. Crighton, McKay and Haughton, of Wellington, and Messrs. Duffil and Gibson, of Hawera, have every reason to be gratified, seeing that their estimate of the cost of the work was £90.000, around about which figure the majority of the tenders ranged. THE CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL. STRIKING DECORATIVE EFFECTS. RECORD BUSINESS DONE. The town of Hawera presented a •brighter appearance to-day than it has for years past, and the business people have every reason to be satisfied with the result of their efforts to make the town a most attractive centre fqr Christmas shoppers. The work of decoration commenced in earnest yesterday, and to-day the business streets bore a carnival aspect. The decorative scheme for the most part consisted of abundant greenery, brilliant paper streamers artistically arranged in many fanciful designs and vari coloured balloons. The whole effect was striking and remarkably in keeping with the festive season. The window displays of all the business premises placed before the public a wonderful variety of seasonable goods, and. the enterprise of the shopkeepers was amply rewarded, for record business was reported in all quarters. The streets were crowded with people, and the whole town gave the impression of Christmas Eve rather than of a day earlier. The crowd was made up by & very large proportion of children enticed out by the promises of the retailers that Father Christmas would have something interesting for them. In the middle of the afternoon High Street was packed with young people, and when Father arrived mounted on a lorry bearing an attractive Christmas tree, he was given a rousing reception, and his bounty was fully enjoyed. The. scene to-night was even morepleasing, the community lighting and special powerful lights in the main, street, showing off’ the decorations with greater effect.

Hawera’s Christmas week has commenced exceptionally well, and the business people intend, not to rest on their oars, but to provide shopping values and novelty attractions that should make exery day of the week a pleasure to visitors. MISCELLANEOUS NEWS. The Hawera police have issued a Warning that the use of fireworks in. the borough will not be permitted, and point- out that a penalty of £5 is provided for offences in this direction.
