A terrible mine disaster occurred at the Randfonteiir Estates. A edge containing a white man and thirty natives was descending the south vertical shaft-, 4750 feet deep, when the driver was horrified to find the strain suddenly cease, the cage having dropped 1000 feet and crumpled into a mass of twisted wreckage.

Rescuers immediately descended and discovered human remains wedged in the timbers, while at the bottom of the shaft only the top of-the battered cage could be seen emerging from the water. Baling had to be resorted to, but so tai no bodies have been recovered.
