CYCLING.
NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. (By “Fleet.”) The New Plymouth League Cycle Club is holding an electric light sports ipeeting at Western Park on the evening of January 1 (New Year's Day). There will be a band in attendance. Running, walking, and cycling events are on the programme. Amongst good cycle performers likely to compete will be R. Johnston (19124 winner of Mountain Race), C. Bint (North Island road champion), R. Lovell (19*23 winner of Mountain Race), C. Parker (well known to track enthusiasts), W. Roebuck (of Australasian experience), and R. Yardley (an improving rider). Good fields are expected. An interesting matched race over half a mile was held last Friday evening, C. Parker being handicapped to give G. Herdman 70 yards. The race resulted in a dead-heat, through Herdman’s surprising effort, W. Roebuck (the judge), being unable to separate them. After the Christmas holidays, it is the intention of those responsible to 'bank the cycle track at Western Park another three feet with good clay, and to cover the surface with cinders, thus making it one of the best cycle tracks in New Zealand. This is going to improve riding considerably, and with electric lights on the track the club will be able to hold many very interesting cycle meetings in the evenings.
