GAMBLERS FINED.
RAID AT WELLINGTON. TWENTY-THREE ARRESTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Dec. 13. The police have for some time been keeping a watchful eye on certain premises in the vicinity of Clyde <?uay where gambling was suspected of .taking place. Elans were laid for a raid, and Ja/st night these were curried to a successful issue. Sibonly before 10 o’clock a party of detectives assembled, and, after each had taken up his appointed station, an entry was made into the premises, where it is alleged a number of men were discovered engaged in gambling. As a result 23 men were arrested and a considerable amount of money impounded. In the Magistrates Court a taxi proprietor. Francis Patrick Law, 39 years of age. was fined .£4O, in default two months’ imprisonment, for keeping a common gaining-house at 178 C lyde Quay. For being found on the premises 21 other men were fined £2 each and one was fined £3. Law was given 14 days in which to find the money.
