ACCIDENT AT PORT.

FALL IN SHIP’S HOLD. WELL-KNOWN FOOTBALLER INJURED. A painful accident befell -Mr. Ton* Campbell, the well-known Taranaki resentative footballer, at the port .at New Plymouth on Saturday, Mr. Campbell sustaining injuries- to his right fool, the extent of which is at present unknown. Mr. Campbell was assisting in the discharge of the Waikawa, and was one of a gang handling case oil. The in which the cases were stacked jJroviued a narrow platform running the length of the hold, with a drop of about 28 feet on either side. Mr. Campbell was standing on this platform when the rebound of a. loaded sling grazing an empty sling he was holding, caused him to lose his balance and fall backwards. Mr. Campbell had sufficient presence ol mind to realise that such a fall would probably be attended by serious consequences, and therefore, ■ appreciating his inability to recover himself, he gave himself a twist so as to fai’ forward. He landed on the toes of his right foot -with such force that the impact burst his boot open. He was quickly attended to, and after receiving medical aid was removed, to his home in Tukapa Street, where he is making satisfactory progress.

It is considered that to the fact that Mr. Campbell landed on his toes and also on another stack of benzine cases lie owes his life, for the toes and the give in the cases eased the fall a good deal.. Had he struck the bottom of the ship’s hold the results might easily l ave been much worse. , Mr. foot is to be X-rayed on
