A London cable says Sir Hugh Fraser and Sir William Finlay, the well-known lawyers, have been appointed justices of the High Court. Rev. E. Palgrave Davy, F.R.G.S., of Auckland, founder and superintendent of the New Zealand Children’s Mission, is again on a visit to New Plymouth in the interests of the young people.

Mr. W. V. Valentine, who for several years past has been on the staff of the Farmers’ Co-operative Company at Hamilton, has rejoined the staff of Newton King, Ltd., at New Plymouth, with which he was associated prior to going to Hamilton. Mr. John Cook, Commissioner of Crown Lands, left New Plymouth this week on a short visit to Auckland. He will be absent from official duties till the middle of January. Mr. W. D. Armit, chief draughtsman, has been appointed Depu'ty-Commissioner of (.Town Lands and chief surveyor during his absence. Presentations to Messrs W. Bush and W. Rea on the eve of their departure from New Plymouth, were made at the annual banquet of the Presbyterian Bible classes connected with St. Andrew’s Church on Saturday evening. The Rev. O. Blundell, who-made the presentations on behalf of the members of the classes, referred in appreciative terms to the- work done by both recipients during their connection with the church and its organisations. The funeral of Mr. Samuel Henry Greer, which took place on Saturday at the Te Henui Cemetery, was attended by a large and representative gathering of mourners. Deceased was a veteran of the South African war and of 1 the recent war, and organisations represented at the funeral were the Masonic fraternity, the Legion of Frontiersmen, the South African War Veterans’ Association and the Boy Scouts. A large number of beautiful wreaths were forwarded from friends and firms, both, in and outside New Plymouth. The service was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon F. G. Evans, and the Masonic ritual by Bro. C. C. Lake.

Mr. R. L. Cooper (conductor of the New Plymouth Choral Society) and Mrs. Cooper (accompanist), were presented with a cheque during the course of a concert by the 'society at the Whiteley Hall on Saturday night. Opportunity was also taken to present Miss Douglas (accompanist) with a marble clock. The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), who is patron of the society, referred ini appreciative terms to the self-sacrificing manner in which Mr. and Mrs. Cooper and Miss Douglas had always carried out their duties, and referred to the high position the choir held owing to the untiring efforts of these three members. The recipients of the presentations suitably replied. Later in the evening the choir and ence were entertained at supper by the executive committee.
