An Auckland message reports the death of Mr. Albert Sanford, aged 80, founder of Sandford’s fishing wholesale business. A London cable announces the death of Viscount Long, who was Secretary for the Colonies from 1916 to 1919 and then First Lord of the Admiralty till 1921. He was 70 years of age. A Sydney message states that Mr. Foster Henry Hartley Sargent, director of the firm of Sargents, Ltd., while viewing scenery near Blackheath fell over a cliff of 300 feet and was killed.

A Sydney message reports that Mr. Arthur Schute, managing director of the firm of Schute, Bell and Co., a well-known and popular wool broker, was knocked down and killed by a motor-car on Thursday evening. The death is reported from Sydney of the driver of the first locomotive in use in New South Wales, Mr. Edward Williams, at the age of 88 years. The locomotive has been in the Sydney Museum foi nearly half a century. Mr. Hugh Mac Neil, ex-champion golfer, of New South Wales, who was a prominent business figure in Sydney and New Zealandj has died at Townsville, North Queensland. He left Sydney for Cairns in August on a health trip, but was taken off the boat at Townsville and admitted to the hospital. He was a director of Messrs. Briscoe and Co., but retired about ten years ago.

An Auckland message says that Dr. T. W. Leys, for many years part proprietor and editor of the Auckland Star, died on Saturday after a short illness. Dr. Leys was 74 years of age. He came to New Zealand with his family in 1863 and after three years’ work as compositor on the Southern Cross, joined the literary staff. With his brother, he founded the Leys Institute, Ponsonby, and presented it with a library.
