HAWERA NEWS.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. MONTHLY MEETING. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, Last Night. The monthly meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce was Held tonight. Present: Messrs. E. C. Fletcher (Vice-president), B. McCarthy. F. Gib landers, P- Bond and A. Sellars. The Taranaki Chamber wrote stating that the direct steamer from Calcutta, Sainarahg, Batavia and Singapore, after calling at the main New Zealand ports, ' usually went to Newcastle to load coal. The Taranaki Chamber believed that with a cargo of 450 tons (which was required for a call at New Plymouth direct from Australia), New Plymouth would be included, as that port would 'be en route to Newcastle. The Hawera Chamber decided to refer the letter to the business people interested to allow them to decide whether it was feasible to make up a ( cargo. The Levin Chamber sought support to a resolution urging the Government to proceed with the proposed deviation of the main railway line between Levin and Marton, but the Hawera Chamber took no action. Replying to the chamber’s protest in regard to the holding up of traffic by shunting operations at the Tawhiti railway crossing, the general manager of railways stated that it was thought that newspaper reports on the subject were exaggerated. It was impossible to avoid occasional stoppages, but the railway staff were fully alive to the necessity of keeping the road open. The date of the annual meeting of the chamber was fixed for October 24. RACECOURSE IMPROVEMENTS. The congested state of the traffic which has obtained after all race meetings at the Egmont Racing Club’s course will be relieved in future, the club having undertaken a loading -scheme which will allow of vehicles entering the motor paddock by one gate and going out by another. Some time ago elaborate gates were erected but they have never been used to any extent. Motors will enter the paddock from Waihi Road when the present work is completed and make their exit on Fantham Street, joining Glover Road in the direction of the town via Turtfturu Road. The new work is estimated to cost about £750 and is being carried out by day labour.

In view of the accident which recently occurred in Waihi Road in the congestion of race traffic, the racing club approached the Hawera County Council asking that a footpath be constructed alongside the road or that the road itself be widened. The council required a £1 for £1 subsidy from the club before it would undertake the work and the matter is in abeyance for the present. THE WJC.T.U. The monthly meeting of the Hawera branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Methodist School room, the president presiding over a fair attendance. Devotions were read by Mrs. Reed.
