BY-ELECTION TO-DAY.

VACANCY ON BOROUGH COUNCIL. A poll will be taken in New Plymouth to-day to fill the vacancy on the borough council caused by the retirement of Mr. R. A. Large. Two candidates are in the fie’ld, Messrs W. W. Thomson and J. Jemison. Polling hours will be from 9 a.m. till 7 p.m., and it is expected that the returning officer (Mr. R. Day) will be able to announce the result of the election at the principal polling booth, Whiteley Sunday School, within a few minutes of the close of the voting. Those entitled to vote are all ratepayers and residents have had the necessary three months’ residence in the town and who are on the municipal roll. The polling booths are; —Whiteley Sunday School, Liardet Street, principal; public hall, Fitzroy: Coronation Hall, Gill Street; Soldiers’ Chib, King Street; Methodist Sunday School, St. Aubyn Street; Mission Hall, Moturoa; public hall, Westown; public hall, Frankleigh Park; garage, children’s playground,Wallace Place; Mr. Peel’s eftore, Vogeltown; old fire brigade station, Devon Street west.
