MAN SHOOTS BARMAID. ATTEMPT ON OWN LIFE. A LOVERS’ QUARREL. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 21, 5 5 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 21. A tragedy is reported at Petersham. A railway fireman named Mclnnes, or McGuinness, shot dead a barmaid named Winifred Foley, aged 21, and then shot himself. He is in a serious condition. The couple had been keeping company, but the girl discovered that the man was married but separated from his wife, and she broke off the courtship. Ho persisted in pressing his attentions and she sought the protection of the police, who warned the man, but ha still persisted. On Saturday Mclnnes visited the hotel and the girl went to the police station and complained. On returning Mclnnes met her and an altercation was proceeding when another admirer of the girl intervened. Mclnnes suddenly grasped the girl round the waist and shot her twice through the breast and himself in the head. The police, who had visited the hotel in search of Mclnnes, arrived on the scene just as the man shot himself. Received Sept. 22, 12.10 a.m. Sydney, Sept. 21. The condition of Mclnnes is improving.
