WEST END SCHOOL.

L • MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The West End School Committee met on Thursday night. Present: Messrs Jas. Garcia (chairman), J. Hawken, T. R. Julian, W. Jones, C. O. Berg, N. G. Nasmith and H. J. Abram. An apology wes received from Mr. J, Lobb. Mr. R. J. Deaxe, a member of the Education Board, was present in connection with the proposal to divide the gymnasium so as to make provision for the extra assistant, who is to take up her duties on October 1. Members of the committee were opposed to the erection of a permanent partition in the gymnasium, which had been erected from funds subscribed mainly by residents of the district and had been intended for purposes other than ft classroom. It was also pointed out that with the erection of the Westown School, the extra classroom might not be required next year. The committee passed a resolution requesting the board to provide a strong curtain as a temporary expedient. Mr. Deare, who is an ex-member of the committee, was congratulated on his re-election to the board unopposed, and was accorded a vote of thanks for his attendance.

Mr. Thomas (the headmaster) reported that the school had re-oponed on September 9, thirteen children having been admitted and fourteen withdrawn. No new cases of diphtheria had been reported from the school since the holidays, but measles were prevalent among the infants. The average attendance last week was 475, but it had considerably improved this week. The annual inspection visit by the board’s inspectors had taken place this week. The report was not yet to hand, but the inspectors expressed themselves as pleased with the work done. Miss Stiller had been appointed a special assistant to begin duties on October 1. Her appointment would considerably relieve the work in some of the larger classes. It was proposed to hold the school entertainment on October 16. He would like the committee to apply for the use of the Western Paj’k for the boys playing cricket. The West End boys were successful in the final match for the primary school football championship, defeating Stratford by 16 pointe to 3. The. basketball competition would probably finish about the end of the month.

Large as a member of the committee was accepted with regret, and it was resolved t> place on record the committee’s appreciation of the services he had rendered. Mr. G. R. Mclsaac is to be recommended to the board to fill the vacancy. The headmaster reported that Mr. Large had donated parallel bars, geometrical cubes, pictures, etc., to the school. He was accorded a vote of thanks. The visiting committee (Messrs W. Jones and J. Hawker) reported on various mattere, whidh will receive attention. •Messrs J. Hawker and T. R. Julian were appointed a visiting committee for next month.
