STATEMENTS REFUTED.

AWAKING SETTLERS’ GRIEVAWE. DISTRICT NURSE'S RESIGNATION. Two members of the Awakino Medical Association came over 100 miles to attend a meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board at Hamilton to refute certain statements made at the previous meeting to the effect that their district nurse had 'had to resign because she could not obtain decent accommodation (says the Waikato Times). The deputation assured the board that they had asked the nurse whether Mr. Charles Trevelyan, President of accommodation, and she had replied that she had no complaints to make. The association felt highly indignant that the nurse’s statement should go abroad, for the settlers had done their very best to make 'her lot a happy one. In fact, they were, even at the time she was leaving, considering the erection of a special cottage for her. Surprise was expressed that the 'board, without hearing the settlers’ side of the question, should pass a motion resolving not to appoint another nurse to Awakino until suitable accommodation was provided. Mr. Blackman remarked tluat had the board been conversant with the full facts, as stated by the deputation, they would never have passed the motion complained of. The deputation came from a waybaek district far beyond the beaten trade, and they were representative of settlers who had made truly noble efforts in the cause of health in their area. Theirs was a grievance indeed.

Members generally endorsed these sentiments, and it was agreed unanimously to call for applications for the position of district nurse at Awakino.
