WANGANUI TOURNAMENT. " FIRST DAY’S PLAY. A’EW PLYMOUTH COMPETITORS. (By Wire —Special Reporter.) Wanganui. Last Night. The WangahUl Golf Club’s annual championship tournament opened to-day under rather unfavourable conditions, but the weather improved during the day. The course was in splendid order and some good scores were recorded. J. Goss, the runner-up for the amateur championship, returned a fine card of 74, 34 out and 40 In. His score going out read: 4,4, 4,4, 3,4, 4,3, 4—34, against a bogey of 41, a really .fine effort. E. Knight with 76, was the next best. 40 out and 36 In. Coming In his card showed: 3,5, 3,5, 5,3, 4,5, 3—36. The afternoon’s scores were not bo good, Dr. Williams (77) being the best. Of the New Plymouth players Stephenson did best, returning 90 In the morning and 87 In the afternoon, and but for taking five putts on the green at "The French Pass” would have qualified. A. S. Hasell, 89 and 91, was driving well, but was troubled by the green, missing many easy putts. Dr. Wade was also troubled by the greens, several of his putts just failing to do the required. The Wanganui Golf Club's tournament opened to-day in unpleasant weather owing to rain overnight and the fairways and the greens were heavy. Some excellent cards were returned.
