HARBOUR BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Sept. 16. The Waitara Harbour Board held its monthly meeting Oq Friday last, Mr. Jas. Hine presiding. An application by Mr. W. J. Morrison for the lease of section 9, block 87, at an annual rental of £4 10s was accepted. Messrs. Gaustad and Marlow were granted a renewal of the lease of their cement store at a rental of £l5 per annum. Sub-leases were granted from M. Beckbessinger to C. E. Bellringer, W. Sampson to H. Moyes, E. Reynolds to L. J. Hayward and F. Zimmermann to W. Sampson. An application was received from Mr. J. H. Kdbby for permission to build a cottage on the beach.—lt was decided that nothing could be done in the meantime owing to the Waitara Seaside Committee having the use of the land. The board are to interview the Seaside Committee and come to some arrangement. A communication was received from the stationmaster stating that as the wharf was Unsafe no engines would be allowed upon it.—The matter was left in the hands of the works committee. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The adjourned annual meeting of the Waitara Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday evening, when there was a better attendance. Mr. W. R. Johns (president) occupied the chair. The chairman gave a resume of the chamber’s activities during the past year. Through their action the Waitara Road crossing had been made safe. A mettalic circuit in connection with the telephone service was nearly completed. A postal delivery on the east side of the town had been secured. They had induced the British Trade Commissioner to pay a visit to Waitara, which was likely to do good. The chamber also took part in the deputation to Wellington in connection with the Stratford-MaJn Trunk Railway. 'Hie president said he was sorry to say the attendances at their meetings had been far from satisfactory, and he could not understand this apathy on the part of business men, as it was to their interests to have a live chamber to improve and look after matters appertaining to the welfare of the town and district. Every business man should be prepared to make some sacrifice.

The balance sheet, disclosing a satisfactory position, was adopted. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. C. R. Stead; vice-president, Mr. H. J. Wells; secretary and treasurer, Mr. R. H. Lawrence; executive, Messrs. W. R. Johns, J. Pany, A. Herman, S. G. Fraser, and E. C. Gaw. Mr. W. R. Johns was asked to accept nomination as president for a further term, but owing to pressure of work he could not see his way clear. The annual subscription was fixed at 7s 6d. It was decided to hold meetings bimonthly o n the second Monday at 7.30 p.m. Mr. C. R. Stead, who represented the chamber at Wellington on the StratfordMain Trunk Railway deputation, briefly addressed the meeting on the matter. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Stead for ably representing the chamber. It was decided to forward a letter to Mr. P. J. Allen expressing the hope that he would soon be restored to health. Mr. J. Parry sooke in eulogistic terms of Mr. Johns’ services during his presidency, and proposed a hearty vote of thanks to that gentleman, which was carried by acclamation.
