HAWERA NEWS.

HEADMASTER FARBWELLED. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, March 8. At a farewell social evening tendered to Mr. C. A. Strack at the Hawera Main School last night, the large assembly hall was filled to overflowing. Mr. Strack has been headmaster of the school for 29 years, and has completed 45 yeans’ service as a teacher in Naw Zealand, having now retired on superannuation. Mr. J. W. Harding, chairman of the School Committee, presided at the function. Apologies were received from Messrs. H. R. Kemp, W. Hutchins, F. Hutchine, H. D. F. James, W. Sheat, J. Caughley (Director of Education!, J. A. Hanan. M.P., Monsignor Power and the Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister for Education).

Messrs. J. W. Harding, W. H. Collins (chairman of the Wanganui Education Board), H. L. Spratt (representing the old boys of the school). A. Lees (chairman of the Taranaki Education Board), Mr. L. A. Bone (Mayor of Hawera), Mr. J. R. Corrigan, M.P., and Misa Corrigan (representing the old girlci) made eulogistic references to Mr. Strack’s services to the school and Mrs. Strack’s social popularity. Mrs. Bone presented Mrs. Strack with a bouquet. Mr. Corrigan, on behalf of the people of Hawera, presented Mr. Strack with a beautiful gold watch and chain and Mrs. Strack with a diamond ring. Mr. and Mrs. Strack left this morning on a holiday’ tour.

The contractors for the mermorial in Princes Street have laid the last stone, and only finishing work remains to be done.
