STRATFORD NEWS.

THE A. AND P. CARNIVAL.

(“•From Our Own Reporter.) Stratford, March 8. Preparations for the Stratford A. and P. carnival are well in hand, and entries are coming in freely. Owing to the difficulty of arriving at decisions in the matter of decorating cars and motor-cycles, the committee have been asked to extend the time of entry. This request has been acceded to ana post entries for this section, will be received. The committee, however, would like an indication of probable entries as soon as possible, so that arrangements can be completed.

There can be no question of the popularity of the trotting events, and, judging by the numerous entries, the public should witness some very fine racing. Nominations closed to-night, and handicaps will be made public as early as practicable. Given a fine day the carnival will be well worth travelling many miles to see, and the society expects all its old friends to roll up in their hundreds for the occasion. GENERAL ITEMS. Mr. H. J. Beswick, formerly Mayor of Christchurch and at present chairman of the Christchurch Domain Board, was in Stratford yesterday. During the afternoon, in company with Mr. P. Thomson, he visited the Stratford domains and expressed himself as agreeably surprised at the splendid condition of Victoria Park. With its wealth of native trees and the river and shady walks, King Edward Park made a distinct impression, and formed what he considered would be Stratford’s big asset in years to come.
