THE DALGLEISH CUP.

The competition for the Dalgleish Cup for swimming and life saving was held at the New Plymouth Baths at Kawaoa on Saturday afternoon, when Mrs H. Avery, of New Plymouth, succeeded in defeateing last years' holder of the cup. Miss E. Purdue, by the narrow margin of one point. The cup was presented by Mr V. Dalgleish last year for competition among the members of the New Plymouth Ladies’ Life Saving Club, and the conditions under which it is competed for Impose a stiff test on the capabilities of the competitors. Included in the competition are tests which require the competitors to enter the water fully dressed, including shoes, and undressing in the water quickly and neatly, swim 200 yards breaststroke In less than four and a half minutes, and 100 yards backstroke without using the arms, in less than three and a half minutes; dive from two different heights, and then from the low springboard; swim across the baths feet flrst; plunge from the surface and raise a 101 b stone in seven feet of water.

The possible marks for the competition are 200. Mrs Avery gained 171 points and Miss Purdue 170. the only other competitors. Misses O. Perlman and Mr Hunt, gaining 168 and 151 points respectively. Mrs Avery’s victory was chiefly due to her breast and backstroke swimming. The judges were Mr P. Mathieson and Dr Wade. FLANNAGAN CUP RACE. Owing to the rough weather yesterday the race for the Flannagan Cup from the baths at Kawaroa to the East End beach was postponed. It is proposed to hold the event next Sunday at the same time. The East End Life Saving Club’s competition for the cup donated by Mr George Grey, which was to be held yesterday, was also post- ! poned on account of the rough weather.
