SCIENCE AND RELIGION.

CONFLICT BETWEEN THE TWO.

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.

London, March 8.

Sir Oliver Lodge, speaking at the Free Church Congress on the relationship of science to religion, deplored the tendency among religious people to regard scientific discoveries as hostile to the faith. He asserted that the aim of science was truth.

“We live among miracle*,” ho said, “or rather the development of the formative principle which religion calls the spirit of God. A conflict occurs between science and religion regarding man’s origin. Genesis described man’s innocent state as being followed by the fall, whereas science claims that there has been a rise. It must be admitted that the average man has not yet progressed far. He has not yet. fashioned his life into much dignity and beauty. His ancestors were cave dwellers, with toils around the trees; man to-day is a slum dweller. The majority of mankind are living under depressing conditions and it is little wonder they spend hours in public houses. The wonder is that they are so good. Humanity is again tending towards massacre. Man’s destiny can end by mutiial extermination, if he ®o wills it.”
