PENSIONS FRAUD.
SENTENCE IN PETER'S CASE. MAN GETS TWO YEARS. ’S WIFE GIVEN PROBATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, March 7. At the- Supreme Court Sir Robert Stout sentenced the following prisoners: Nicholls Peters, aged 25, and Alice Mabel Peters, aged 23, for defrauding the Pension Department of £1)75. The male accused was sentenced to two years’ reformative detention and the wife was admitted to probation for two years.
Counsel could offer no explanation for Peters’ action, but claimed that his wife was dominated by him. He made a plea for probation, a<s there were two small girls to be considered. The Chief Justice said Peters had been well paid, yet- he started on a career of fraud. It was clear he had dictated to his wife, instead of which he should have guarded her.
