MAN RUNS AMOK.
TERROR IN SMALL TOWN. TELEPHONE CUT OFF. ARREST AFTER STRUGGLE,, By Telegraph—Press Association. Ashburton, Last Night. A man aged 29 ran amok at Chertsey yesterday. He began by rushing through an hotel and continuing to the railway station, knocking several clerks off their stools. He entered the telephone exchange and took charge by bolting the door. Telephonic communication was stopped for an hour and a half, during which time the Ashburton police were informed from. Rakaia. Two constables hastened out, smashed the exchange door and grappled with the wild man, and after a struggle they brought him to Ashburton. A constable this morning took food and washing materials to the man's cell whereupon he was attacked by the man, who displayed great strength. A sergeant went to the constable’s assistance and the man was overpowered. Subsequently he was removed to the asylum.
