WAR MEMORIAL
A TENDER ACCEPTED. CENOTAPH TO COST £1923. LOCAL STONE TO BE USED. The tender of Messrs. J. G. M. Russell, J. McCracken and A. Handlev, of New Plymouth, has been accepted for the New Plymouth war memorial. They undertake to construct the cenotaph in local stone throughout, and their price is £1923. A meeting of the War Memorial Committee was held last night to consider the ten tenders received. Present:, The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Archdeacon F. G. Evans, and Messrs. C. E. Bellringer, C. H. Weston, A. M. McDairmid, W. C. Weston, A. B. Gibson, F. J. Hili, V. Griffiths, W. J. Penn, J. R. Hill, W. H. Skinner, W. J. Chaney, F. Hartnell, Mrs. Dockrill and Mrs. Mac Diarmid. Considerable discussion centred around the question of the stone, local stone and Italian marble being most favoured. Finajly it was decided in favour of the local stone. The tenders received were:— Sydney Cooper (Christchurch), Timaru blue stone base, balance Oamaru stone, £1557 15s. Sydney Cooper, Timaru blue stone base, balance Mt. Somers stone. £1720 15s. Messrs. J. T. Julian and Son, Ltd., blue stone base, balance Oamaru stone, £1725. Messrs. J. T. Julian and Son, Ltd., blue stone base, balance Mt. Somers stone, £1875.

Walpole and Patterson Ltd., blue or local stone base, balance Sydney white’ stone, £2200. W. F. Short, concrete steps, balance Italian marble, £2250. Messrs. Walpole and Patterson Ltd., Coromandel granite base, balance Sydney white sandstone, £2463.
