NEW PLYMOUTH MATTER’. (By wire—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. In the House, Mr. 8. G. Smith (Taranaki) has presented a petition from the widow of William Charles Ellis, a South African and Great War veteran, Mrs. Ellis served as a nurse and on applying for a widow’s pension was refused, on the grounds that her marriage did not take place within two years of the discharge of her late husband. This she regards as a grave injustice and asks for a suitable pension to be granted her. Frederick John Cowling, a farmer, of Westown. petitioned Parliament to-day for an allowance of £l5 2s. Mr. Cowling says he successfully defended an action taken against him for the theft of telegraph poles, but was not allowed costs. He incurred expenses totalling £lO 2s and to this he added £5 for time lost in the preparation of his defence.
