The second qualifying round was played in heavy rain and wind at Troon and produced many surprises. Eighty-eight players returned aggregates of 159 and under. Qualifying for the championship Sarazen and Barnes had bad second rounds, giving them aggregates of 160, so that they failed to qualify. Others who unexpectedly failed were Vardon, Wethered, Massey, Boomer, and Hoffner (an American). Kirkwood, with 152, qualified comfortably. The American Diegel, Farel and Hagen qualified. WAVERLEY v. NEW PLYMOUTH. An enjoyable match took place at Walwakaiho yesterday afternoon between Waverley and New Plymouth, the result being that New Plymouth won by six matches to four. The weather was good, but the greens and fairway were heavy. Waverley were without the services of two of their best players, and Etherington played as a substitute for them. The results are (Waverley players being mentioned first) Muir lost to P. Grey; Aiken beat Elliott ; Parsons lost to Austin; Johnston lost to Burgess; Jones lost to Andrews; Etherington lost to Avery; Palmer lost to Blennerhassett; Dallison beat Wynyard; Willis beat Barthorp; Tucker beat Dempsey. NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. Next Saturday a bogey handicap will be played, and this will also be the second round for the Medley Cup. Players are to choose ‘.heir opponents.
