VERANDAH COLLAPSES.
STRUCK BY MOTOR-CAR. A sensational accident, involving the collapse of a shop verandah, occurred in New Plymouth at 12.30 p.m. yesterday. A car, driven by Mr. Shepherd, of the Hygienic Bakery, and containing two passengers, was proceeding from town along Devon Street West, and when approaching the intersection of Morley Street another car was seen proceeding up the hill to Devon Street. In order to avoid a collision, Mr. Shepherd drove close in to the footpath, but the othecar, driven by Mr. Barclay, mechanic at Messrs. Newton King’s garage, made a wide sweep to round the corner, thus forcing Mr. Shepherd eloser than ever into the left, with the result that his car just missed a pillar-box on the corner, and was forced on to the footpath, bumping into the verandah posts of Mr. H. E. Hills grocery shop with such force that the verandah collapsed. No one was injured, and the car sustained only slight damage. The impact of the car and the collapse of the verandah sounded like a clap of thunder and quickly attracted a large crowd from the vicinity.
