OPENING OF THE SEASON. MATCHES FOR TO-DAY. The opening of the cricket season in North Taranaki as far as the club competitions are concerned takes place to-day. The prospects this season look very bright for an interesting competition. Particularly pleasing is the revival in central Taranaki, where a mid-week competition has been started with four teams, viz., Inglewood, Stratford, Midl irst and Eltham. VICE-REGAL GAME. The cricket match arranged in connection with the visit of the Governor-General to Watganui took place on Wednesday at Cook’s Gardens, the Vice-Regal team gaining a somewhat easy victory over the opposing eleven, says the Chronicle. The day was beautifully fine, and except that the wicket, and outfield were a bit heavy the circumstances were all that cricketers could wish for. The respective elevens were captained by Messrs. R. Orton and K. H. Cave, the former’s side—which hatted first—including Lord Jelli-

coe and Captains Curtis and Mundy, members of the Vice-Regal staff. Lady Jellicoe was present during the game. Captain Curtis slowed a good style and batted well, his driving being well timed and clean. Lord Jelilcoe was cordially welcomed. He opened without delay by driving Hyder along the carpet to the on. Ewan strove hard for the ViceLegal wicket, but His Excellency shaped soundly and drove him for a single and then square cut him for a brace. Lord JelJicoe finally missed a slow, tricky one from Cave, which hit his stumps. Scores: — R. ORTON'S ELEVEN. Captain Curtis, b Wells 68 R. P. London, b Hyder 57 J.
