LINK WITH THRONE.

THE IRISH DEADLOCK. OUTLOOK NOT BRIGHT. QUESTION OF PLEBISCITE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 26, 9.45 p.m. London, Oct. 25. The Lord Chancellor, speaking in London, declared that the Irish Conference would not be abandoned unless and until it is realised that it is impossible for either side to continue.

It is officially announced that a full meeting of the Irish Conference has been postponed as the committee mentioned yesterday is still sitting. The Australian Press Association learns that, though the conference has not terminated, little ground for optimism exists. The chiefs on both sides decline to talk. It is rumored that the Sinn Fein delegates suggested that the question be referred to the Dail Eire ann, who will be requested to state if a plebiscite should be taken in West and South Ireland. It is believed in authoritative circles that the final issue will be decided to-day or to-morrow. Certain suggestions made in the conference have been submitted to

committees. Nevertheless the link with the Throne is the outstanding point of cleavage, and there is no indication that either party has the slightest intention of surrendering.

Moderate opinion in Ireland is that England is attempting to negotiate a new religious and political frontier based on a plebiscite or on the census of 1911. A mere vote by counties would restore Tyrone and Fermanagh, where the Catholics are in a majority, and round which the fiercest controversy rages, bodily to the South. That would probably give Ulster a new grievance, but it is generally agreed that the present frontier under the Home Rule Act is capable of useful amend-

It is also suggested that the Government should publish the political and religious map of this area, which was officially prepared for the conference at Buckingham Palace in 1914.
