The death of Mr. Spence, of Otakeho, is reported. The deceased was a very old identity of the Wai mate Plains.

An old resident of Auckland, Mr. James C. C. Harvey, died at Devonport last week at the age of 85. Mr. J. B. Murdoch was yesterday re-elected chairman of directors of the Jail Dairy Company.

A London cable announces the death of Mr. Joseph Jonas, who was degraded from knighthood in 1918.

Mr. E. W. Carter, of the Palmerston North railway staff, has been promoted to the position of stationmaster at Inglewood. Mr. Henry G. Brodie, solicitor, of Hawera, was yesterday admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court by His Honor Mr. Justice Salmond.

Sir William Herries and the Right Rev. the Bishop of Dunedin arrived from London by the Rimutaka on Tuesday.

The death has occurred of Mr. Ambrose Bole Morrow, who was a resident of Auckland for over 60 years, having arrived by the barque Mersey in June, 1861. <■

Mr. H. S. Hough, manager of the Ashburton branch of -Uio Bank of New Zealand, has received, notice of his promotion to the charge of the bank’s business at Fiji.

Inspector Fouhy, of Wanganui, anl formerly of New Plymouth, is reported to be making a good recovery after his recent accident.

Mr. W. Morrison, Liberal candidate for the Patea seat at last election, was entertained by friends at Patea on Monday evening, and. presented with a cheque from ins supporters in the Patea district.

The acting-Prime Minister (Sir Francis Bell) has arranged to leave for Auckland to-day in order to attend a gathering arranged by the Auckland newspaper proprietors in connection with the visit of Lord Northcliff.

Mr. R. Robson has been appointed general manager of the Sydney Daily Telegraph. Mr. Robson commenced his newspaper career on the Otago Daily Times, and prior to going to Australia was on the staff of the New Zealand Herald.

A foimer resident of Onehunga, Mr. Irvin Hurst, has just died at Oamsfru at the advanced, age of 88 years. :It ’is o\er 48 years since Mr. Hurst wint to reside at Oamaru. Tn the early fifties, Mr. Hurst arrived in Australia, being attracted by the gold rush. So arrived at Onehunga by the Talbot i in 1863, and volunteered for service in the Waikato War.

A cable from London says that at the French Embassy the Ambassador conferred on Mr. W. F. Massey, on behalf of the President of France, the order of Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor. Mr. Massey, in accepting the decoration, said he did so as a compliment to New Zealand, as much as an honor to himself personally, in his capacity of the ’Dominion’s representative at the Empire Conference.
