SECURING BETTER HOTELS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hokitika, Last Night. The Westland Licensing Committee, at its annual meeting, adjourned the majority of applications for renewals for three months to enable the recommendations of the police and Health Department to be given effect to. The Health Department requirements are fairly extensive and are mainly in regard to installations of hot and cold water services throughout the buildings and attention to sanitary conditions. The police reports made no reference to misconduct of licensees during the past year.
REFEREE ASSAULTED. Hokitika, Last Night. At the Magistrate’s Court two women and also the husband of one were convicted and lined 40s, and costs 455, on charges of assaulting a referee after si football match at Rimu. four weeks ago. CHARGE OF EMBEZZLEMENT Maslcrton, June 9. Frederick James Benge was charged at the court to-day with tlie theft of money belonging to his employed, J. Pomeroy, grocer, the sums, being £lO 10s 3d,' £8 and Us 2d. Accused was admitted to probation for three years and ordered to pay the money misappropriated within twelve months. NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE. Christchurch, Last Night. , At the New Zealand Alliance conference, Mr. A. R. Atkinson (Wellington) was' unanimously elected president. A resolution was carried that the conference, hearing of a petition to repeal the prohibition of the liqior traffic m Samoa, would be against any such measure being adopted, in view of the conditions upon which Samoa was handed over to New Zealand. The conference expressed the hope that the NewZealand Government would accept the invitation of the Swiss Government and send an official delegate to the international congress of prohibitionists at Lausanne.
