Mr. K, Maxwell, of Rahotu, left by yesterday's mail train for Tauranga. -He was accompanied by Mrs. Maxwell. Mr. W. W. King, late of the staff of the Magistrate*} Coiirt, Auckland, has been appointed associate to Mr. Justice Hosking. A Lnndon cablegram states that Lord Derby, British Ambassador in Paris, has retired, and L6rd Hardinge, formerly Viceroy of India, has taken over the Embassy. Mr. .1. J. Boak, who has represented Messrs. Maeky, Logan, Ltd., as buyer for tiie firm in England for over sixteen years, has returned to Xew Zealand. A cable from London- reports the death of Lord Olenconner, who was Loi;d High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland -from lfll'l till 1914. He was (il years of age. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., president of the Dominion School Committees' Association, wlio has been attending a conference of the Auckland School Committees' Association, returned from Auckland by the mail train last night. Mr. Hugh J. 0, Coutts, who for a number of years held the position of district land valuer for the Government at Te Kuiti, has been promoted to the position of ofticer-in-charge of the Land Valuation Department at Auckland. Under date of October 4, a London correspondent writes:—A message of congratulation was sent by Viscount ■Tellicoe to an elderly relative, Miss Grace Emily Gardiner, of Rownram, near Southampton, who celebrated her 105 th birthday yesterday. She was born in the year of tiie battle of Waterloo, and, although bedridden, is still very bright. A cable from London announces the death of the Rt. Hon. Jesse Collin;';. M.P. for Kdgbastmi (Binaingham), at the age of 88. One of the notable figures in the House of Commons, Mr. Jesse Collings was n self-made man, who had always shown keen sympathy with the rural poor, of which class he was born. He became a prosperous Birmingham merchant, and maintained his interest in politics.
