SHIP SPRINGS A LEAK.

FIRES PUT OUT BY WATER. THE VESSEL BEACHED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Secretary of the Post Office has received a wireless message from the Chathams stating . that the , steamer Kaliu sprang a leak at two o'clock on Thursday afternoon, when approximately fifty miles west of the Island, during a heavy 60uth west gale. ; The water put the fires out at two o'clock on Friday morning. It was impossible to launch the boats owing to a heavy sea. By strenuous efforts after the weather moderated the crew managed to get the water low enough to permit the, fires to be' relighted. The ship got under way again at four o'clock on Friday afternoon and reached Whangaroa at noon on Saturday, where the vessel was beached in a sinking condition.

The passengers, crew and mails are safe.
