A Melbourne cablo reports the death of Mr. John Davies, president of the Legislative Council. Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., who has been appointed to New Plymouth, arrived here on Saturday,
Corporal Collie, of Auckland, who recently returned from the front after about four years' service,- is at present on a visit to his brother, Mr. W. A. Collis, of New Plymouth. Mr, R. A. Armstrong, Dominion secretary of the Moderate League, arrived from Auckland on Saturday, and Is arranging to address a meeting this •week on the subject of State purchase and control.
The death, at 101 years of age, of Mrs. Elizabeth Shine, of Derwent Street, Oamaru, occurred on Thursday morning. The deceased lady was bo' n in Ireland. Her family numbers 13, the youngest being 47 years of age. The Patea Press reports that anxiety prevails as to the whereabouts of Mr. J. Ryan, dentist, Waverlcy, who has been missing since Monday.' Mr. Ryan, who has been in indifferent health, left for Wangamii on Monday to interview Dr. Wilson, and for some reason failed to do so. It transpired that he spent the night at tJie Criterion Hotel, and left on Tuesday morning to catch the first train, ostensibly to return to Wftverlev, but ho did not arrive in Waverlev. Up till Friday no further trace of the missing man had been found. The niany friends of Mr. Smith Laird will regret to hear of his death, which occurred last week (the Wanganui Chronicle reports). The deceased gentleman, who was G2 years of age, was a son of the late Mr. James Laird, and had spent practically the whole of his life in Wanganui, being the liead of the well-known firm of Laird and Sons, nurserymen. Ho was a man of high character, and was held in the greatest esteem by nil who knew him. He was in good health until the 7th inst., when he was attacked by appendicitis.
