WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A general exodus took place from Waitara on Saturday to see the football match between Auckland and Taranaki in New Plymouth, and motor cars and motor buses reaped !i rich harvest. 1 daresay a lot of people who have liked to go wete unable to get owing to the train service not being-, available. Owing to counter attractions during that week, the committee of the Waitara Choral Society lias decided to postpone the concert advertised for the 18th inst. It has now been arranged to hold it instead on October 2. Particulars wilf be advertised later.

Troopers D. Ttate and J. Taylor arrived on Saturday morning by motor car from New Plymouth. Both are looking well. Lieut. C. T.ate had to go with the Ellenga to Wellington on duty. It has been arranged to hold a committee meeting to-night in the Council Chambers to further the arrangements for the returned soldiers' welcome home ball.

THe Methodist ladies' guild held a ver" successful function in the Clifton Hail on Thursday afternoon, which netted somewhere about £35. It consisted of a sale of work, together with cakes, sweets, flowers, and produce. The hall was nicely decorated,^and reflected great credit on those who were responsible for it. The following were the ladies who presided over the various stalls:—Plain and fancy work, Mrs. Fear and Miss Bayly; cakes, Mesdames Huse and R. Tate; produce, Mesdames Hollis and W. Topless; flowers. Mesdames F. W. Lawrence, W. J. Smith, and S. Tate; sweets, Mesdames Furness and Murgatroyd. The afternoon tea was in the capable hands of Mesdames Elliot and Itendrick. The Rev. Mr. Richards opened the function, aa the Mayor (Mr. Morgan) was absent.
