STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.; (All communications, letters, etc, left with Mr H. .1. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.) EFFICIENCY BOARD AND TEMPERANUK. Stratford, March 27. The Midhirst hall was well filled lust evening, when three members of the ( Hawera Efficiency Hoard placed theirl views before un attentive and enthusi- J aslic audience. Mr. I.!. Sangster pre- j sided, and, with the exception of one | individual, the public behaved admirably. The speakers were Messrs Powdrell, Hunter, and Belton, who dwelt I upon tlie infinite good that would ensue if the polling on April 10 favored prohibition. Although it was evident at times that the views uttered by the speakers were not altogether acceptable to some, it must be conceded that the visitors were able to answer all questions. At Toko Mr. VV. H. Were presided over another full meeting. The speakers were Messrs F. Mills, 0. Hawken, and E. Marfeil, who received a very attentive hearing, and at the conclusion they were tendered hearty votes of thanks and were entertained at supper by sympathisers of the temperance party.

The goods train, with car attached, leaving Stratford at 3.55 p.m., is very handy for the school children travelling north, whilst Midhirst and Tariki folk also patronise it largely, and it connects with the Waitara train, being due at New Plymouth at 0.15 p.m. Occasionally it runs to time; frequently it docs not, probably owing to the very heavy traffic. Officials' all along the line endeavor to push it along, and its erratic running is no fault of theirs. If there is a remedy at all it. looks to lie in the despatch of the train earlier in the day than at present from Hawera. When late, the train is sidetracked at T- 'i, and that means several hours' delay, and this to the scholars, particularly in the winterlime, is not desirable. Latterly the general public have liberally patronised the carriages, there being frequently 80 to 100 leaving Stratford, .and they put up with th ; s inconvenience" because the next train is too close to the express. Again, a delay at Tariki means that the Waitara and other passengers at Lepperton have to possess their souls in patience sitting in a railway carriage awaiting the dilatory train. 'Whatever the cause, there is too much traffic on the light engine. The only apparent remedy is an earlier start from Hawera. so as to obviate the crossing at Tariki and permitting crossing the outgoing New Plymouth train at Jnglewood as scheduled, Sheep and stock still continue to come in freely from cut east. Already this week one special train has arrived here and on Saturday a special train is expected with 20 trucks of sheep for the Farmers' Works at Smart Road.
