Another of Wanganui's military veterans pasßed away on Tuesday last, in the person of John W. Freeman, of Dublin Street, Wanganui. The deceased eamc out to New Zealand in the early forties with the 58th Regiment, and took part in the early Maori war at the Bay of Islands. On retiring from the army ho settled down in Wanganui over 60 years ago, and resided there until the time of his death, at the ripe old age of 00 years Veteran Freeman was the last known survivor in New Zealand of the 58th Regiment. Strange to say, during the last few days two late members of that regiment have passed away, the other being the late Veteran Wm. H. Free, of New Plymouth, who died on Saturday last, the 25th instant, at the advanced age of 93 years. It is a peculiar coincidence that two men (apparently the last two of the 58th Regiment in New Zea land), who performed military duties together 70 years ago, should have answer ed the last great "roll call" within three days of each other.—Wanganui Chronicle
