An agitation lias been hegun at Rotorua for the retention of the services of Dr. Herbert as Government Balneolo gist.

Mr. Buckeridge, speaking at Eltham on Thursday, said that, travelling alone, children were apt to pick up bad manners and otherwise deteriorate. It was deplorable to see such a meagre attendance (the meeting was in connection with the establishment of a technical school), suggesting that the people of Eltham were satisfied for the town to become a sort of suburb of Hawera and Stratford. The collection of agricultural statistics is about to be carried out by the police in this district, and farmers are therefore requested, in order to facilitate the work and save time when the police call, to note what stock they held on January 31 this year. It Bhould be noted that ii particulars are called for say, a fortnight after January 31, and the farmer has in the meantime increased or decreased the number of Ms live stock, the number held at the date of the call should be disregarded—the number as at January 31 is the return required. In previous years many farmers have been unaware of the collection until called air by the collector, and were consequeatly handicapped considerably in giving the' correct returns of stock. The Tourist and Expansion League is making an appeal to residents ■to put tip visitors next week where they can do so without undue inconvenience. Apart from the races, and the great classical event to be decided, there are large number* of visitors who are absorbing practically all the available accommodation.
