A FINE PROGRAMME AT THE EMPIRE. "GOD'S LAW AND MAN'S." . A doubly delightful programme was introduced to a splendid attendance at the Empire, Theatre last night. Tho chief attraction is the fine Metro play God's Law and Man-s," starring the attractive little star, Viola Dana. Tup p ay itself is unusual in treatment and plot, and some truly amazing scenic effecs are introduced. Briefly, the stort concerns the life of Ameia,'an East Indian girl of mixed Hindoo and English blood. To save her from the corrupt ntes of the temple of Krishna, Dr. Drummond buys her as his wife. Then he falls m,loye with her. A death in his amily calls the surgeon back to En". and There he is amazed to learn that ins father has chosen a bride for him—a girl who loves another man'. Fate brings the East Indian girl to England Ihe young surgeon tells his family or her. Believing she stands between the man she loves and his happiness, she takes poison. The surgeon saves her ljfo and it is learned that she is the half sister of the English girl chosen to be his bride. How "the v/ife by purchase" finds contentment according to the law of God And of man forms a soul-stirring climax to an unusually powerful play The programme is made doubly entertaining by the inclusion of an Australian Gazette, the "Rex Beach Travel Series," the eighth episode of "The Secret of the Submarine," and a humorous comedy Die full programme will bo repeated tonight. THEDA BARA AT EVERYBODY'S. "HER DOUBLE LIFE." Theda Bara has never been featured to bettor advantage than in the William Fox film, "Her Double Life." screened or the first time to a full house at Everybody's last evening. The story is one which admirably fits the magnetic personality of this great artist, who beginning life at a disadvantage, as »' child of the slums, works her way to a high position in London society. That she delberatcly impersonates ' another whom she believes dead to gain this high position in no way detracts from the warm interest of the picture. The cast is particularly strong and includes Stuart Holmes Walter Law and the famous 1< ox kiddies, Jane and Kathorine Lee. In addition to the big Fpx attraction the programme (also includes a powerful Triangle feature, "The Paws of the Bear," in which William Desmond and tiara Williams give a masterly portrayal of startling events in the workings of the secret service intrigues between the nations at war. The full programme will bo repeated for the last time tonight and it is one that no amusement seeker can afford to miss.
