YESTERDAY'S PROCEEDINGS.

A sitting of the Magistrate's Court before Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., was held yesterday. DEFENCE CASES.

Sergeant-Major Crompton, for the Defence Department, proceeded against a number of youths for failure to render personal service required of them under the Defence Act, 1008, by attending Senior Cadet parades. Vincent Riley, Percy Trueman and Rae Oliver were each fined 5s and costs Js. A more drastic penalty was inflicted in the case of W. B. P. Ayres, who did not appear. Sergeant-Major Crompton said that two months ago Ayres had applied for six weeks' leave, which had been granted, and the youth spent that lime following-up race meetings. He had done no parades during the year, and was ''an out and out little dodger." There were two previous convictions against hirn. A fine of £3, costs 7s, was imposed. Noel Keith McDonell, who described himself as a horse trainer, Fitwoy, who had been warned but had failed to register, gave as an excuse that he had only just returned from a race meeting at Auckland. Hia Worship inflicted a fine of £l, costs 7s, remarking that military drill was rather more important than horse-racing at the present time. In the case of E. James, Sorgeant'.Major Crompton did not ask for a penalty, as the lad has registered as soon as he was warned. A conviction only was recorded. BREACHES OF BY-LAWS. For riding cycles on footpaths, James Millar and Frank Hurley were lined sb, costs 7s. | Patrick B. Fitzherbert was penalised ss, costs 7s, for driving a car on the South road, after sundown, without proper lights. George Charles Kibby was charged wtih having driven a motor car in Devon street without a tail light. Defendant pleaded guilty, but stated that the light was burning when he left the Red Post corner. A fine -of sa, costs 7s, was imposed. BREACH OF PROHIBITION ORDER, Horiana Tepuni, of Petone, pleaded guilty to a breach of a prohibition order on November 3. There were no previous convictions. A fine of 20s, costs 12s.
