H.M.S. AVENGER.

NEW ZEALAND SHIP SUNK BY ENEMY. The public of New Zealand have learnt with the keenest regret of the loss in the North Sea of H.M.S. Avenger. The vessel, which was an up-to-date ship of 15,200 tons, driven by twin steam turbines, was torpedoed on the night of June 13th and 14th. She was designed and built for the Union Steamship Company to run as a mail steamer in the New Zealand-Vancouver service, and the original intention was to christen her the Aotea-Roa. Owing to the war, however, she was nsver employed on the service intended, and was converted to an armed merchant cruiser, under the British Admiralty. At the time of her being commissioned as a warship her complement of officers had arrived from New Zealand to take the vessel out, and these officers were taken over with the ship.
