STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, May 13. A meeting of the Domain Board was held on Friday afternoon. Present: Messrs. G. N. Curtis (chairman), T. 11. Penn, and P. Thomson. Lieut, Gray, of the local Defence Office, applied for permission to use the disused gravel pit for a miniature rifle range.—Application granted, subject to the Defence Department (Wellington), giving a letter of indemnity to the Board against any accident. It was decided to construct a footpath between the two gates in Hamlet Street and gravel same. The Stratford Bowling Club held a social on Thursday evening to finish up the season. About 40 bowlers were present, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. A presentation was made to Sir. H. Edgecombe," the green warden, for his eiiorts in having such a fine playing green during the season. Mr. R, 11. Robinson returned from a trip to Sydney last evening. He left for Wellington this morning to meet his son. Private Stan Robinson, who is returning to New Zealand by one of the transports.

At the annual meeting of the Pluiikett Nurse Soeipty the balance-sheet showed a credit of £l9. The officers elected for the eqsuing year are: President, Mrs. A. W. Budge; vice-presidents, Mesdames Abraham and J. H. Thompson; hon. treasurer, Mrs. Prentis; hon. secretary, Mrs. Stronaeb.

A party of local motorists who were returning from New Plymouth shortly after one o'clock this morning, discovered Messrs. Lister Bros' bakehouse on fire, but, despite the willing help at hand the building was totally destroyed, and the store _ adjoining narrowly escaped destruction. The insurances are: Building £IOO, stock ,tr>o, plant £3O, in the South British, but the loss is much more in excess of these amounts. The local bakers thoughtfully came to the unfortunate firm's assistance, and are enabling them to supply their customers with the "staff of life."

Mr. T. Mercer, one of Stratford's oldest business men, has disposed of his business and intends residing in Palmerston North, where he has purchased another business. Mr. Mercer has been in business here for 26 years.
